Anti-Drone Technology – What Is It and How Does It Work?

Anti-drone Why?

Advances in drone technology (and increased affordability and attainability) are pushing the limits of everything from home security to aerial photography, allowing civilians to explore higher and farther than ever before. However, with new opportunities come new threats.

For example, in December 2018, 140,000 passengers and 1000 flights were affected due to drone sightings over Gatwick Airport near London. And similar incidents have happened in other airports around the world. In simple words, as drone technology advances, so does the need for effective anti-drone technology. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at what anti-drone technology is and how it works.

How Does Counter-UAV Technology Work?

Counter-UAV technologies typically fall into two categories – detection and mitigation. Detection systems use various technologies to pinpoint a drone’s location. For example, they use infrared to track heat signatures, acoustic sensors to detect the unique sounds of drone motors, and radio frequency scanners to detect signals emitted from a drone’s remote controller.

Detection is usually the first step before mitigation. Anti-drone mitigation systems intercept or repel a drone using interference signals that can jam communications between the drone and its operator or by using technologies to capture or shoot a drone while in flight. Now, let’s look at some of these anti-drone systems more closely.

What Is a Drone Jammer?

Drone jammers work by blasting electromagnetic noise at the radio frequencies drones use to communicate with their ground station (typically 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz). Essentially, when drone jammers send their own electromagnetic signal, it overrides the drone’s communication systems and usually results in the drone activating its ‘Return to Home’ function. When this happens, the counter-UAV team can identify the pilot and take further action.

What Is an Anti-Drone Gun?

As the name suggests, an anti-drone gun is a type of anti-drone technology designed to destroy or immobilize a target drone. Anti-drone guns come in many forms. For example, they can be handheld weapons (like a traditional projectile gun), smart missiles, or larger artillery-scale systems.

Although anti-gun guns all have the same goal (taking down rogue drones), they can differ in how they meet this goal. For example, some anti-drone guns destroy the target using a projectile, others use high-energy beams to disrupt or destroy drones, and others can physically seize the drone midflight using things like nets.
